Organization of the Construction

CIVIL WORKS PACKAGES

The Civil Works have been divided into three packages:

CW1

  • Upstream works including RCC dam (150 000 m3), spillway (87 000 m3 CC) and radial gates (size 5 x 8 x 11.15), rim bunds, headrace channel.
  • Roads rehabilitation and new works + bridges
  • Operator’s village at Gnommalath.

CW2

  • Intake structure and gates
  • Underground works including low pressure tunnel (1000m, diam.8 m), shaft (300m, diam. 8 m), high pressure tunnel and steel lining (1000m, diam 7 m), manifold.
  • Power Station platform, civil works (630 000 m3 rxcavation, 56 000 m3 CC) and operating offices.
  • 115 kV and 500 kV switchyard platforms.

CW3

  • Tairace pond excavation (1 800 000 m3 excavation).
  • Regulating pond, weir (including 50 000 m3) roller compacted concrete and gates.
  • Downstream channel (6 800 000 m3 excavation) including a 710 m tunnel

ELECTRICAL & MECHANICAL PACKAGES

Equipment to be supplied, installed and commissioned was divided into two packages:

EM1

Power station generating units including:

  • 4 Francis generating units:
    The Francis generating units are generating units with 350m net head and 247 MW each, including spherical valve, speed governor, exitation system and 13 (one spare) associated 500 kV one phase step-up transformers.
  • 2 Pelton generating units:
    The Pelton generating units are generating units with 350m net head and 43 MW each, including spherical valve, speed governor, exitation system and 2 associated 115 kV three phase step-up transformers.
  • Power Station Mechanical auxiliaries:
    Cooling, compressed air, ventilation and air conditioning, oil treatment, handling equipment
    • 500/115/22 kV substation equipment including exchange transformers.
    • 115/22 kV substation equipment at Thakhek including exchange transformer.
    • SCADA system and protection equipment
    • Telecommunications
    • Workshop equipment and service facilities

EM2

  • 500 kV double circuit transmission line (130 km) between Nam Theun 2 power station and Savannakhet (including Mekong crossing)
  • 115 kV single circuit transmission line (70 km) between Nam Theun 2 power station and Thakhet.
